Like many of his contemporaries, hard bopper Donald Byrd began to explore the new genre of fusion music on his albums at the end of the 1960s. kofi” was created in 1969 and 1970 during sessions with two different but equally high-caliber ensembles, with which Byrd ventured into the new stylistic terrain in an all-round convincing way, without completely abandoning his hard bop roots.
