    • Death/Thrash Metal classic remastered! A strong Master album re-issued. After the great “On The Seventh Day God Created... Master”, Master returned in 1993 with a new effort entiled “Collection of Souls”, basically a bit more Thrash Metal in style. It is hard to find a band that started as a Death/Thrash one in a period of Thrash Metal and becomes Thrash in a period of Death Metal! Well, Master did it with this album. The tracks here, even if less Death Metal as on “On the Seventh Day God Created... Master”, are really enjoyable. The first thing you will notice is the production: a bit more clear and Thrashier. The guitars are not so tuned down anymore and the vocals are less growling. The opener “Constant Reminders” is still in old school style Death/Thrash; a song that could easily have fitted well in Master’s previous works with the fast bass drum and up tempo. Most songs that follow are Thrashier and even have a bit of punkier approach, going straigh ahead. A cool different song is the nice Thin Lizzy cover of “Jailbreak”, Master goes Hardrock. The super-fast “Silver Spoon” is once more a good piece of brutal Death/Thrash and a perfect track to end this album. “Collection of Souls” is an effort that is surely more Thrash Metal than Death Metal but with lots of enjoyable moments.

    • “Lemuria”, one of the two twin albums that Therion released in 2004, is definitely one of the best in their career. “Lemuria” must rank up there with the best releases of the zero’s decade: a landmark album. This album remains in high rotation and is one of only a handful of genre defining records released in a lifetime. Therion tone down the operatic quotient of earlier albums like “Voivin” and increasing the metallic elements to reach a perfect balance. Balance is probably the best way of describing Lemuria. It’s paced perfectly, from the bombastic openers “Typhon”, “Uthark Runa” and “Three Ships of Berik (I & II)” which all feature sharp guitar work and varied vocal styles. The album settles down towards the middle – during “Lemuria”, “Quetzalcoatl” and the first half of “Dreams of Swedenborg” which boasts an absolutely brilliant guitar solo and is a definite highlight on an album so equal throughout. The album clears out on the positively brilliant trio “Arrow from the Sun”, “Abraxas” and “Feuer Overture” which brings the album full circle with a nice mid-tempo rocker. Also worth noting is the production which is also perfectly balanced so that no element of the music is overbearing, allowing the strength of song writing to shine. Creating something this multi-faceted and cohesive, utilising the entire tonal spectrum with more than 171 musicians is an achievement in itself. Therion also obviously had a huge amount of material early 2004 when they set about recording their pair of albums. “Lemuria” in particular of the pair displays a strength of song writing fused together to create the rare kind of record where each track both fits together as a whole and can stand on its own. That is probably why “Lemuria” is so good and why isolating any particular track more than we have in this review would not do the others justice.

    • Sarcasm delivers a furious and energetic trip to the early days! Multifaceted entertainment for sophisticated Death Metal freaks! Sarcasm has had a storied career. Originally formed in Sweden in 1987, Sarcasm would release blistering Death Metal throughout the early and mid 90's. After a shortlived reunion in 1997, they would come back into the fold in 2015 with a new re-designed version of their lineup. Now they return with their new full-length album "Mourninghoul". "Mourninghoul" is Sarcasm's fifth album, it was recorded during six months of the last year. Mixed and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory at Rorysound. With the new drummer Jesper Ojala the band has recorded their most dynamic and innovative album to date, while the band keeps evolving and raises the bar a notch on each album, the old catchiness and atmosphere is still recognizable. The essence of the band is Death Metal but listening to the album closely and open-mindedly, many dimensions unfold, and indeed the album feels like a journey and explores many elements and emotions of extreme metal. And that was the intention because like the last album, "Mourninghoul" is also concept-based. It's about a two-minded ghoul and it's journey through it's miserable existence on Earth and the deepest abyss, the lyrical structure is like a conversation the ghoul is having with it's higher inner being with answers coming through on it's journey as it's universe expands, with lots of symbolism and metaphors thrown in till it's final realization. Sarcasm does not write lyrics like others, while the musical side of the band is very strong, their unique lyrical style alone makes the band stand out from the rest. There is a deep meaning to their concepts that truly resonates. Take Black Metal, melodies, and Death Metal and blend it all up then you'll have "Mourninghoul". The music remains beautiful, vile, and brutal all in the same. "Mourninghoul" is a triumphantly diverse Death Metal album that brings a complete and competent sound.
