    • Rectangles and Circumstance is an album of ten songs co-written and performed by Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion. The album follows their Grammy-winning Nonesuch debut, Narrow Sea, and their first record as a band, 2021’s Let the Soil Play Its Part, with Shaw on vocals backed by Sō—Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting. Grammy Award–winning engineer Jonathan Low (The National, Taylor Swift) co-produced with them on both Let the Soil… and Rectangles and Circumstances. Sliwinski says in the new album’s liner notes, “After a few years of touring Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part together, with a pandemic in between, we came to record our second album, Rectangles and Circumstance, as a road-tested band who knew each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies intimately.” He continues, “Most of the songs started with instrumental pieces or fragments of pieces from Jason or Eric. “As both a songwriter and a classical composer, Caroline is accustomed to writing lyrics as well as setting them. Going over texts with her is like working on music: I collect a handful of poems and send them over to her, waiting to see if anything catches her interest, then I modify my search based on her feedback,”...  more

    • When this album was released on 22 February 1971 it had ‘instant classic’ written all over it. Widely influential at the time, the opening track ‘Grow Your Own’ by Keith Jarrett was rearranged for big band by Mike Gibbs to provide the powerful opening to his double album Just Ahead (recorded live at Ronnie Scott's in May/June 1972) while Jarrett's ‘The Raven Speaks’ provided the title track for an album by bandleader Woody Herman (whose band was always stocked with hip young players), also from 1972. On the album Jarrett plays both acoustic and electric piano and soprano sax, which gives it tonal variety as well as a feeling of momentum and discovery. Jarrett shows no sign of inhibition using electric piano – indeed, he plays it with audible joy, contributing to the palpable empathy between him and Burton. A few months prior to the album Burton had asked Jarrett to join his group but as we all know, Jarrett eventually went with Miles Davis, so declined Burton, but he did contribute several originals to the group prompting Burton to say: “Well you may as well come and record some of them with us.” As Jarrett said later, “That was a good time for me, I liked the music on that album. Ensemble's a little ragged sometimes, but I enjoyed the session – we enjoyed the session – and it shows.”

    • Raymond Scott is best known as the composer of famous tunes that pop up throughout Warner Bros cartoons. In the late 'Thirties, his celebrated Raymond Scott Quintette was a huge commercial success, a singular ensemble playing a unique and unmistakable style of jazz, full of whimsy and bravura. By the late 'Forties, he had become an electronic music pioneer, both as an instrument inventor and composer. His music is everywhere these days, not just cartoons. For example, Lizzo's recent hit 'Tempo' samples (sips from?) his 'Nescafe,' and he is heard in the recent Netflix hit show Hollywood. The lost chapter between the Quintette and his electronic music was every bit as compelling, starting with the first multiracial radio big band, the 'CBS Big Band'whose ranks included legends Ben Webster, Cozy Cole, and Charlie Shavers. Not only did this unit swing hard, they could also execute the intricate passages for which he was so famous. Hemidemisemiquaver: Buried Treasures of the Raymond Scott Big Band collects 26 exciting cuts, mostly unreleased radio broadcasts recorded by Scott himself and restored by Gavin Ross at Steady Studio in Burbank, CA. The package features photos from the Scott family archive and extensive liner notes penned by Scott scholar Skip Heller, who co-produced this volume with Scott's son, Stan Warnow. Indispensable for Raymond Scott fans or any big band fan for that matter!
