Close marks the long-awaited return of guitarist and composer Steve Tibbetts to ECM, continuing a distinctive musical path that defies genre and geographical boundaries. Recorded between 2021 and 2024 in St. Paul, Minnesota, this deeply atmospheric album unfolds as a twilight meditation—music of introspection, shadow, and slow illumination. “Music is a twilight language,” Tibbetts reflects. “The job is to translate some shadow into sound.”
Over the course of twenty interconnected pieces, Tibbetts shapes yearning, improvised melodies against layers of ambient loops, subtle percussion, and evolving harmonic colors. His palette ranges from the raw distortion of electric guitar to the luminous shimmer of twelve-string acoustic, anchored by low drones and the organic resonance of hand percussion. The result is at once intimate and expansive, drawing as much from Eastern spiritual traditions as from the vast quietude of the American Midwest. Longtime collaborators Marc Anderson and JT Bates lend rhythmic depth through gongs, handpan, and drums, completing a soundscape that feels timeless and deeply human.
