Description

Unsettled by the post-2020 world situation, Charles Lloyd began to develop a musical vision in the form of a new studio recording featuring a new band. This quartet is the eleventh release from the legendary saxophonist, along with pianist Jason Moran, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Brian Braid, who moved to the prestigious Blue Note label, which brought together four unique voices for the first time! This magnificent double album was completed in the spring of 2023, Lloyd’s 85th birthday, and brings together a collection of Lloyd originals, old and new, reimagined in a majestic body of work that shows one of the most important musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries still at the peak of his powers. Six of the songs on the album are new compositions from Lloyd’s pen, including “The Water Is Rising,” “Late Bloom,” and “The Ghost of Lady Day,” making this a magnificent double LP volume. The performances by the new members of the quartet also beautifully portray the worldview he envisioned. This is a remarkable work that could become a new masterpiece by the greatest jazz composer, musician, and bandleader who continues to inspire audiences today. Charles Lloyd will celebrate his 86th birthday on the album’s release date. Expectations are high for this new album from a man who continues to be active at the forefront of the scene.
