Description

Miles in France – Miles Davis Quintet 1963/64: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8″ (8LP box set), the eighth in a series of bootlegs containing four hours of previously unreleased material by Miles Davis, the king of music. France – Miles Davis Quintet 1963/64: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8″ is a record of all five performances of the second golden quintet, a pivotal period in Miles’ musical evolution. The 1963 recording features George Coleman (ts), Herbie Hancock (p), Ron Carter (b), Tony Williams ), and Tony Williams (ds), and the 1964 recording features Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone.(*The classic album “Miles Davis in Europe” was recorded live on July 27, 1963.) France was an important place for Miles, both professionally and personally, and quickly became his favorite country to tour. Miles played in France more times than in any other country outside of North America, and recorded there more frequently than anywhere else. The first time Miles played in France was in 1949, when he was only 22 years old, at the Festival International de Jazz, and then in July 1991, just two months before his death, he gave a concert in Nice. The rare recordings here, some 60 years after their recording, suggest a special relationship between Miles and the group’s France, and beautifully capture the tremendous energy that kept going in the performances.
