    • Death metal legends Master unleash their much awaited full length album this year titled ‘Vindictive Miscreant’. It’s the perfect encapsulation of their trademark gritty sound backed with experience and skills. Few bands were able to continue on the path they carved in, and over three and a half decades later, Master still do it with remarkable aplomb. They’ve set standards for bands, old and new, to follow. There’s nothing here that doesn’t reek of pure integrity, passion for the art form and flawless execution in delivering what they’ve set out to achieve. They’ve been doing it for decades and they’re only honing their craft. This time they’re hungry. ‘Vindictive Miscreant’ is among Master’s strongest albums and it will blow you away with its vitriolic intensity, riffing prowess and memorability. It makes death metal relevant again.

    • This Master album holds Death Metal, Thrash Metal, even some punky moments and a country song. No need to go through all songs here but just a few to give you an indication. The album starts off with the Thrashy “You’ll be blamed” which is reminiscent of the earlier “Collection Of Souls” album (though catchier) and with Abomination tendencies. Also a song such as “Sign Up” is very old school Thrash Metal with those typical harsch Speckmann vocals. “The Serpents Tongue” is a straight forward uptempo Death Metal tune and same goes for “Whatever, Wherever, Forever”. The song “The Perfect Family” comes closest to the d-beat Master we got used to from their first two albums. A very nice surprise is the song “Pistols, Whips and Coyotes” which refers a lot to Macabre in terms of riffs although sounding slightly simpler because of the drums. Had Dennis The Menace played on this song nobody would have noticed it isn’t Macabre. The punky attitude of the album becomes most obvious on songs such as “Rights of Life” and “Envy” (which almost sound like 1987-1991 era Sodom). Most notable song is the punk song “Another Day in Phoenix” which even has some clean vocals and incidentally is one of the highlights of the album. We also should not forget to mention closing song “Ring Of Fire”, a Johnny Cash cover including the trumpets. “Spirit Of The West” is one of the most diverse and surprising Master albums yet.

In 1990 the album was first recorded in Chicago (later released by Hammerheart Records) but Nuclear Blast didn't approve this recording and had the band record the album again at Morrisound Studios. As it turned out the third recording (which was eventually released as "Speckmann Project") was also not approved by Nuclear Blast and the Chicago recording was remixed instead by Scott Burns. The 2008 and 2011 CD and vinyl reissues both contain the original mix remastered.

    • Paul Speckmann played a key role in the Death Metal formative years, with bands like Terrorizer and Entombed acknowledging him and Master as a major influence. And both Master’s first effort and the one and only Deathstrike album could be considered classics even today, thanks to their intensity and to a simple but effective song writing style. Master have never played Death Metal in the pure sense of the term, rather a form of down tuned heavy Thrash, and this style is to be found again here. “Dictators” rekindle with the glorious Deathstrike days, while “Cast One Vote”, “American Freedom” and especially “Disturbed” clearly sound like classic Master tracks. Lyrically, Paul Speckmann continues with his anti-American crusade. “Let’s Start A War” is Master’s 5th album from 2002 and has turned out to be a solid and good-class disc containing guitar-heavy Death Metal that has a little more to offer besides aggressiveness. If you can’t imagine what that is, let me tell you that Master can best be described as a mixture between Crowbar and Bold Thrower. And the bottom line from the whole story? Death Metal isn’t reinvented here, but it still sounds good. And above all, the whole thing is memorable, even if you don’t make friends the first time you hear it.

    • Since the dawn of human intellectualism, self-aware individuals have sought solitude. Paul Speckmann of Master finds his own solidarity in expressing apathy towards society. Lets acknowledge the introspective impact of Master's 1998 release "Faith is in Season." Crusty bass lines and tom-centric drumming push "Faith is in Season" forward with a reliable tempo, coupled with intermittent guitar leads and Speckmann's defiant screeches define Master's new production - consistent and comprehendible Death Metal. This is further polished with thoughtful song intros that highlight each individual member's musicianship. This foundation supports the guitar melodies and lyrical concepts. Compositionally, each instrument in Master is worth its own weight in gold while also not overshadowing each other. This is a self-evident testament to Speckmann's exemplary leadership because the band line-up on "Faith is in Season" was relatively brief. Similar to 1990's contemporaries like Vader or Obituary, Master solidified their craft with "Faith is in Season" and has since strayed minimally

    • Death/Thrash Metal classic remastered! A strong Master album re-issued. After the great “On The Seventh Day God Created... Master”, Master returned in 1993 with a new effort entiled “Collection of Souls”, basically a bit more Thrash Metal in style. It is hard to find a band that started as a Death/Thrash one in a period of Thrash Metal and becomes Thrash in a period of Death Metal! Well, Master did it with this album. The tracks here, even if less Death Metal as on “On the Seventh Day God Created... Master”, are really enjoyable. The first thing you will notice is the production: a bit more clear and Thrashier. The guitars are not so tuned down anymore and the vocals are less growling. The opener “Constant Reminders” is still in old school style Death/Thrash; a song that could easily have fitted well in Master’s previous works with the fast bass drum and up tempo. Most songs that follow are Thrashier and even have a bit of punkier approach, going straigh ahead. A cool different song is the nice Thin Lizzy cover of “Jailbreak”, Master goes Hardrock. The super-fast “Silver Spoon” is once more a good piece of brutal Death/Thrash and a perfect track to end this album. “Collection of Souls” is an effort that is surely more Thrash Metal than Death Metal but with lots of enjoyable moments.

    • EVERGREY at its finest – the fourteenth studio album by Gothenburg’s pioneering masters of darkness! Without any doubt, the new album marks one of the most dynamic records the band has ever crafted throughout their impressive career. Theories Of Emptiness was produced by Tom S. Englund and Jonas Ekdahl, and was mixed by Adam "Nolly" Getgood (ex-Periphery), who worked closely with the band from the start - bringing out the vividness of the album’s overall sonic profile. Rounding out the album’s production, mastering was helmed by Thomas “Plec” Johansson (Soilwork, The Night Flight Orchestra, Onslaught, The Gems, Eleine and many more). “For us, progression is paramount”, states Tom S. Englund when discussing the eleven track opus, Theories of Emptiness. “We're dedicated to ensuring that our music remains innovative and avoids stagnation. With each album, we strive to introduce something new — a unique flavor, a different key or chord, fresh voices in our writing, or innovative production techniques.” In fact, no stone has been left unturned. Tracks are created to balance each-other mutually: from the aggressive tones of “Misfortune“ contrasting the light-hearted opening of “To Become Someone Else“, to the ballad “Ghost of My Hero“ leading into the furious riffs of “We Are The North“. Album opener “Falling From The Sun” (sequel to A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament) track “Ominous”) and “Say“ interweave heaviness with mesmerizing keyboards and unpredictable instrumental parts, as also heard on “The Night Within“. On “Cold Dreams”, Englund’s distinctive voice is accompanied by Jonas Renkse of fellow Swedish metal icons Katatonia, splicing the song with a stellar performance that underlines another intense facet of the album. In addition, Englund’s daughter Salina provides lush backing vocals that enhance the song’s dynamics even more. Ending on a quiet note, Theories of Emptiness depicts exactly what emptiness is about, first with the immersive “Our Way Through Silence“, and then with “A Theory Of Emptiness” which, with timid piano, makes us rationalize our innermost feelings. Navigating realms of darkness and light, Theories of Emptiness takes listeners on a carefully balanced roller coaster ride - showcasing EVERGREY's ever-evolving sound in 2024 and beyond.
