Salford, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom (1976 – 1980) Joy Division were a post-punk band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion). The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer, Ian Curtis. Much of their popularity/reputation arguably resulted from frequent playings on air by iconic DJ John Peel, but it is easy now to overlook the impact that the first album, Unknown Pleasures, had on post-punk music at the time, as reference the number of prominent bands that cited this album as an influence. The remaining members reformed as New Order and they have gone on to achieve much critical and commercial success. With their dark, cavernous sound and their use of synthesizers and electronics, Joy Division are considered the pioneering band of the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Originally released in June of 1970, Workingman's Dead was the fourth studio album recorded by the Grateful Dead. A departure from Grateful Dead's historically psychedelic and experimental works, Workingman's Dead brought the songcraft of Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter to the forefront in this now iconic Americana album, which will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2020. The title of the album comes from a comment from Jerry Garcia to lyricist Robert Hunter about how "this album was turning into the Workingman's Dead version of the band." The sound of this album was influenced by Garcia's pairing with songwriter Hunter as well as the group's friendship with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The sound that CSN created made the Dead strive for a better, more harmonious sound themselves. The album is ranked number 264 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Produced in a limited edition of 10,000 copies, the picture disc features all 8 perfect songs from the original album, newly remastered by Grammy® Award-winning engineer, David Glasser.
